After a friend told me about Ruthie, I had the privilege of attending her performance at a local coffeehouse. Her mixture of soul, folk and gospel music is enlivened by her interaction with an audience. She has an endearing sense of humor and a beautiful, strong voice.
The two CDs I have are very different but overlap a little in style. Runaway Soul is my favorite of the two, being more of a blues album with several old gospel numbers. But Stages, her live album, has a haunting version of Oh, Susannah that is not to be missed. I’m looking forward to listening to her latest, The Truth According to Ruthie Foster.
The video clip on her web site shows something of Ruthie’s philosophy of song.
