A Christmas Dozen

Over the last several years I’ve purchased a variety of Christmas music to listen to in the weeks leading up to Christmas and the week or two after, mostly while driving to and from work. I challenged myself to come up with a dozen favorite arrangements of old and new Christmas songs from this collection, without listing the same recording artist twice. This doesn’t include music I plan to add some day – including classical – or the old Christmas hymns and folk songs that I enjoy singing but don’t have in recorded form. Here’s my list, in no particular order. What’s yours?

  • Come Darkness, Come Light – Mary Chapin Carpenter
  • O Holy Night (in Navajo) Jana Mashonee
  • Light of the Stable – Emmylou Harris
  • Once Upon a Christmas – Selah, with Dolly Parton
  • Where My Heart Lives – Randy Travis
  • One Small Child – Ali Matthews
  • I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day – Casting Crowns
  • Go Tell it on the Mountain – Odetta
  • Little Drummer Boy – Go Fish
  • Away in a Manger – Third Day
  • Light of the World – Mark Chesnutt
  • Joseph’s Lullaby – Mercy Me
